Taking Time To Lead

Something I hear often from managers is that they don’t have time to take out of their day to deal with the problems created by their employees. Many feel that they took time out of their day when the employees were hired to give them guidance, and that should be enough.

Here’s a reality check; if you don’t make yourself available to your employees at least once a day, you have a dysfunctional office environment. I’m not talking about walking down the hall and saying hello; I’m talking about actually having a conversation about work. How many of us can go day after day just being by ourselves and function properly?

If you’re going to be a manager, a de facto leader of other people, you have to take time to lead. Time isn’t a one time thing; it’s a constant, every day thing. If you have some employees that need more time, it’s your job to give them that bit more time. Employees are not there for your benefit; you’re there for theirs. And if you’re doing the other part of your job, which is evaluation, and you determine that they’re not picking it up in the same fashion that your other employees did, then it’s up to you to decide whether you have even more time to give, or if it’s time to let them go and bring in someone new.

It’s up to each manager, supervisor, director, whatever, to take the time to lead, or give it up entirely and go back to being a worker, alongside those you didn’t feel deserved your time in the first place.

Online

Well, I finally decided it was for the best to give my old host the finger, and move on.  Seriously, they haven’t returned any emails in almost a month.  Soooo F them.  Now on Dreamhost with a plan even better than the last one, this site, TLoM, and a new one, kyblog.org are all on the way.  More info in a bit.

Hitchhiker's Guide Moves Forward

Sweet, the second trailer for Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy was shipped with Constantine.  They had the foresight to move the release date forward a week, so as not to compete with Kingdom of Heaven.  I like what I see so far, and some of the scenes are even better when you already know how they turn out, like the two missiles flying at the Heart of Gold.

Trailer in WMV, RM, and QT Formats
